On May 13, 2024, Rutland residents will vote to elect new members to the following Boards & positions:

  • Board of Assessors
  • Board of Health
  • Library Board of Trustees
  • Planning Board
  • Select Board
  • Town Clerk
  • Wachusett Regional School District School Committee
  • Southern Worcester County Regional Vocational School District School Committee 
  • Town Moderator

For those residents who may be considering running for office, our goal is to provide helpful information to better inform your decision. Involvement in Town government is a great opportunity to learn how our municipality operates while being a voice for the community. Nomination papers will be available in the Town Clerk's office beginning on Thursday, February 8, 2024 and are due by Monday, March 25, 2024.   1. Board of Assessors
  • Number of Seats Available: 
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: Once Per Month (2nd Tuesday of the Month at 8:00 A.M.); Meetings Held at Town Hall
  • Office Support Staff: Principal Assessor & Administrative Assessor

Responsibilities: To assist the Principal & Administrative Assessors with calculating the annual real estate tax rate; the administration of all property data records; maintain accurate parcel owner data; 

These duties are carried out by the office staff under the direction of the Board of Assessors. The Board reviews information provided by the Principal Assessor and uses that data to help inform decisions.

  1. Board of Health
  • Number of Seats Available: 
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: Only As Needed; Usually on a Monday Evening; Meetings Held at Rutland Library
  • Office Support Staff: Health Agent, Animal Inspector & Administrative Assistant

Responsibilities: Provide policy guidance to the Health Agent; promote the health and wellbeing of residents through the prevention and control of disease and injury; assure the quality of food establishments & businesses;

These duties are carried out by the Health Agent and office staff under the direction of the Board of Health. 

  1. Library Board of Trustees
  • Number of Seats Available: 2
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: 2nd Tuesday of Each Month at 7:00 P.M.; Meetings Held at Rutland Library
  • Office Support Staff: Library Director

Responsibilities: To serve as a vital link between the Library and the community; helping to direct funds & review the annual budget; oversee general management of the Library; setting policy that governs the Library;

  1. Planning Board
  • Number of Seats Available: 2
  • Length of Term: One Seat for 2 Years; One Seat for 5 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: 2nd & 4th Tuesday of Each Month at 6:30 P.M.; Meetings Held at Rutland Library
  • Office Support Staff: Town Planner, Administrative Assistant

Responsibilities: Review & render decisions on various applications including special permits, ANR plans, site plan review & subdivision plans in conformance with the Town's Zoning Bylaws; Members also serve on the Planning Board Bylaw Subcommittee, which reviews and drafts zoning bylaws. The Subcommittee meets, as needed, on Wednesday evenings.

These duties are carried out with the assistance of the Town Planner and office staff under the direction of the Planning Board.

  1. Select Board
  • Number of Seats Available: 2
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: Bi-Weekly on Mondays at 6:00 P.M.; Meetings Held at Rutland Library
  • Office Support Staff: Town Administrator, Executive Assistant

Responsibilities: Oversee operations of general Town government; enter into contracts on behalf of the municipality; develop & adopt policy; approve Treasury warrant & payroll; oversee development of annual Town budget; 

These duties are carried out with the assistance of the Town Administrator and Executive Assistant. There are some additional obligations including attendance at certain Town events (i.e. dedication ceremonies, award ceremonies) and Town Meetings. Annual Town Meeting is held in May each year, and if needed, Special Town Meeting is held in November each year.

  1. Town Clerk
  • Number of Seats Available: 1
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Office Support Staff: Assistant Town Clerk

Responsibilities: This position is an employee of the Town and serves as the Chief Election Officer, Register of vital statistics & record keeper and performs statutory functions. Those functions include (but are not limited to) preservation of official records, issuing various licenses & official documents and administration of fair & accurate elections. This is a full-time position with supervisory responsibilities of the Assistant Town Clerk.

Please Note: There is pending legislation that was passed at the May 6, 2023 Annual Town Meeting that will change the Town Clerk's position from elected to appointed upon the retirement of (or other vacating of the seat) the current Town Clerk. If a resident other than the current Clerk is elected, the seat will transition to appointed upon passage of the Home Rule Amendment. The position would then be appointed by the Town Administrator acting on behalf of the Select Board.

  1. Wachusett Regional School District School Committee
  • Number of Seats Available: 1
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: A Minimum of Once Per Month at 7:00 P.M. at Wachusett Regional High School (Subcommittee Meeting Schedules Vary)

Responsibilities: The School Committee in each city and town, and each regional school district, shall have the power to select and to terminate the superintendent, shall review and approve budgets for public education in the district, and shall establish educational goals and policies for the schools in the district consistent with the requirements of law and statewide goals and standards established by the board of education.

  1. Southern Worcester County Regional Vocational School District School Committee
  • Number of Seats Available: 1
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: 1st Monday of Each Month at 7:00 P.M. at Bay Path Regional Vocational High School (Subcommittee Meeting Schedules Vary)

Responsibilities: Oversight of and responsibility for the school district, including fiscal management & establishing criteria to determine if its goals and policies are being met. The superintendent serves as the School Committee's Chief Executive Officer and educational advisor.

  1. Town Moderator
  • Number of Seats Available: 
  • Length of Term: 3 Years
  • Meeting Schedule: Annual Town Meeting (May Each Year), Special Town Meetings (If Scheduled)
  • Office Support Staff: Town Clerk, Assistant Town Clerk, Executive Assistant

Responsibilities: Preside over Town Meeting & other municipal meetings, as needed; appoint members of the Finance Committee on an annual basis.
