Bd of Health Mercury Recovery Program

Mercury is an element that can be harmful to human health and the environment if not disposed of properly.  Mercury can be found in a variety of household products like thermometers, thermostats, button-cell batteries and fluorescent lamps. Types of lamps that are included in the program are 4 and 6 foot fluorescent lamps, u-tubes, compact fluorescents and circular.  It is illegal to dispose of these items in the trash in Massachusetts.

The symbol “Hg” on a bulb or package means the bulb contains mercury. Residents, please recycle fluorescent lamps and bulbs by bringing them to Wachusett Lumber at 87 Main Street in Rutland. Ballasts and street lamps are not included in the Mercury Recovery Program.

Thermometers, thermostats, button-cell batteries and rechargeable batteries can be brought to the Board of Health at the Town Hall, 250 Main Street, Monday-Thursday
