The Town of Rutland is currently seeking community members interested in
serving on the Rutland Cultural Council. There are at least 3 vacancies on the
council that need to be filled. Interested candidates should have a demonstrated
interest or record of service to the arts, humanities or interpretive sciences. The
Council generally meets 4 times a year on weeknights. Council members review
grant applications in the fall and make funding decisions.
The Rutland Cultural Council is part of a grass-roots network of 329 local councils
that serve every city and town in the state. The program is the largest, most
decentralized one of its kind in the United States. The state legislature provides an
annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which then allocates
funds to each local council.
“The volunteers on the Rutland Cultural Council are a wonderful group of people
with a variety of backgrounds in the arts” said council co-chair Suzanne Smith. “We
enjoy supporting arts and culture in Rutland and look forward to welcoming new
members to the council.”
Previous grants awarded by the council have included support of many programs at
the Rutland Library, Rutland Council on Aging, Rutland Land Conservancy, as well
as the three schools in town. The Council’s funding priorities can be found on the
