Proclamation of Sister City: Marietta, Ohio
May 19th, 2012
WHEREAS, General Rufus Putnam was born in Massachusetts, and enlisted in of one of the first regiments of the Revolution in 1775,
WHEREAS, General Rufus Putnam returned after the war to settle in Rutland, Massachusetts in 1780, where he advocated strongly for land grants to veterans of the Revolution,
WHEREAS, while living in Rutland, Massachusetts, General Rufus Putnam and others established in 1786 the Ohio Company of Associates for the express purpose of settling the western territories,
WHEREAS, General Rufus Putnam was instrumental in the passage of the Ordinance of 1787, also known as the Northwest Ordinance, which established the precedent by which the federal government would be sovereign and expand westward across~North America~with the admission of new~states~
WHEREAS, The Ordinance of 1787 is arguably the most important legislation that Congress has passed with regard to American~public domain lands,
WHEREAS, on April 7, 1788, General Rufus Putnam led a group of Revolutionary veterans to the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers, and there established Marietta, Ohio, the first permanent American settlement in the Northwest Territory,
NOW THEREFORE, the Board of Selectmen of Rutland Massachusetts, on this day of May 19th, 2012, declares Rutland, Massachusetts to be the Sister City of Marietta, Ohio.
